Listen to Dreamer Deceiver and you know Metallica took that guitar sound for One. Great album. Of course, Judas Priest set the blue print for a lot of metal.

The first album you buy from a band often ends up being your favorite. I kept on buying later releases, but never thought the band eclipsed Sad Wings. It often gets cited as an abum that created a new template for others to follow. Maybe it did, but the vocal sound on Deep Purple In Rock has similarities and came out a few years earlier.
It seems unlikely that Priest ever learned from or even heard the first Trettioariga Kriget (Sweden 1974) album, but the vocals and the amazing mathematical density of the playing makes it easy to believe they used a time machine to make that album.

I was fortunate enough to see Judas Priest twice in 1976 at Northampton County Cricket Club, a small venue that was a bastion of rock and punk, mid to late 70s.
The set list comprised entirely of this album and it's predecessor, the debut album RockaRolla. I'm not really a fan of what became Heavy Metal, but they were brilliant and clearly destined for a wider audience.

Hearing Sad Wings back in 1976 was a life-changer. They really saved heavy music. People forget that in 1976 heavy music wasn't remotely popular like it was a few years earlier.

I love this album. By far my favorite heavy metal album (in my music library of lots of hard rock, classical, and lighter rock music), though early Black Sabbath has started to grow on me as a distant second place.

At the time the first album I ever bought from priest was Sad Wings, at that point they only had 3 albums out Sin after Sin was the newest, but I bought this one because the album cover was just freaking good, and after I heard it, that was it I was a Priest fan for life.
