Actor Kyle MacLachlan feels fortunate about being Conan O’Brien’s friend.

Kyle sits down with Conan to discuss his new memoir Fictional Selves, how being plucked from the stage to star in the 1984 adaptation of Dune led to a lifelong collaboration with director David Lynch, and bringing a unique eccentricity to his iconic role as Agent Cooper in Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks 2nd season, ABC as mentioned was demanding an answer to who killed Laura. Also Bob Iger hated the show and wanted it gone, why he almost cut off the show before final episodes, and then moved it to the worst night for viewers, Saturday night.
DL made the Fire Walk With Me film where he no longer had the major restrictions of tv at the time, so he was free to express his art fully. Not enough people were interested in it because it was a prequel, when many were hoping for what happened after the final ep., so it didn't do great in theatres. It's a work of art, and over time many have come to appreciate it since.
Time rolled on and it seemed like there would never be more of the TP world. Then years later on DL had been thinking about it, and ideas had come to him about doing more ( and he talked with MF about working on the script together ). It would be on Showtime as CBS owned the rights to TP – DL decided he'd need 18 episodes to do it right, and a bean counter said no way, it has be less. DL stood in integrity and said "Then I'M NOT DOING IT." The cast put together an online campaign for people to push back, and it helped. The head of Showtime realized it would be a huge mistake to attempt it without DL and many of the cast walking away, and he arranged a meeting to work it out, and a deal was struck for 18, so The Return went into production with DL directing all of it.
( U.S. ) Fortunately Showtime had decided to finally create a streaming channel, allowing many who did not have cable to watch. Again DL brought new ideas to what tv can be. A great unique artist of vision, David Lynch will be deeply missed and long remembered. #RIP

Dune: after filming was done, DL had zero control over editing, and the studio hacked it down and tried to cover it with "we'll give people a booklet to explain the story." It didn't do well in theatres so the ending is like "tune in next week" but there isn't a next week coming.
The silver lining for DL was Dino greenlit Blue Velvet getting made, and promised DL Final Cut ( complete creative control ). Dennis Hopper gave a master class in acting in his role.

How about we stop asking if something is too far for the general public? Nothing should be too far. If an individual finds it too far, then let them make the decision to turn the channel. Leave the rest of us out of it. People are just begging to have their views dictated by others.

Dune is the only Lynch film I like, never even read the books. Everything from the soundtrack to the visual design are fascinating. Anyone that didn't get the plot must not have been paying attention.

I got to meet Mr. MacLachlan at my previous work, and he was nothing but pure class! He took the time to talk to all the staff, was friendly and courteous! Will always be a fan!
