He Sold Out Wembley, Then Lost Everything

Guitar Meets Science | October 10, 2026

This week, we explore the chaotic downfall of Gary Numan, the synth-pop pioneer who conquered the charts with “Cars” before his career spectacularly imploded. From his meteoric rise with Tubeway Army to his infamous 1981 Wembley Arena retirement, we examine the panic and financial ruin that followed his sudden exit from the stage. We’ll uncover the truth behind his two-million-dollar pyramid stage, his bizarre life as a tax exile and stunt pilot, and the disastrous comeback attempt that left him broke and rejected by the industry. This is the story of how a twenty-three-year-old icon turned his greatest triumph into the most expensive mistake in rock history. Kindly like and subscribe – it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

This VST plugin, The Stereo Sound Extractor, is BADASS -I coded it up from over 10 year’s hard research. It won awards. Now you can own it for the paltry sum of $29. Yup, I’m basically giving it away: https://burninguitfiddle.gumroad.com/l/rbiuu

    "Cars" was all over the radio in Canada. At least in Ontario. It was around the same time, on mainstream radio I heard The Jam, The Clash, The Specials, The English Beat, and some other post-punk bands. Soon after that brief period, you pretty much only heard that kind of music on stations like the legendary CFNY in the Toronto area.

    I was actually disappointed when I first bought The Pleasure Principle. Please let me explain. I had previously purchased the North American version of Xoo Multiplies by Yellow Magic Orchestra, which was actually a compilation of the best from the Japanese version of that album, plus the best tracks from their album Solid State Survivor. I was actually blown away. I still am, but I remember at the time thinking I had stumbled onto the music of the future. Sadly, the future never heard that album, but hearing Numan after that was almost like a culture shock, though I did actually get to like his music enough that I bought a second album of his as well.

    @Guitarmeetsscience…
    LOVE this video on Gary Numan! I will NEVER forget the first time I heard ‘Cars’ on the radio, as a kid, but as a young budding musician (keyboard player!), it blew me away, but then it seemed that was it, no big follow up hit…

    And I hate to burst all the ‘Moooooogies’ here, but most people probably have no idea that it is the last name of Dr Robert Moog, the inventor of the famed Ladder Filter that was in every Moog synthesizer.

    In in the song ‘Cars’, that eerie synth lead that sits on top of the rhythm hook, is in fact a Polymoog synthesizer, top of the line when that song was recorded. ‘Vox Humana’ is the name of the ‘patch’.

    And it is DEFINITELY pronounced ‘Moag’, rhymes with ‘Rogue’!

    And I totally agree with you about David Gilmour, still love his playing though! 😇😎

    if I was him and wanted to get back into making music like that I'd just anonymously join another band. If you're talented the fame and fortune should return I think. So you could start a band with some nobodies and kill it at concerts and do it all over again. I think he wanted to see his name in neon again and didn't realize fame only comes once like that so throwing it away isn't a good idea.

    What if I told you, that I thought this video was about The British Bulldog (he sold out Wembley), challenging Bret Hart, for the Intercontinental Championship, and headlining Wembly Stadium, at Summerslam 1992. Davey Boy Smith may have won that match, but he definitely lost a lot of everything following that match. He was so high on crack-cocaine, that Bret Hart had to literally carry him through the match.

    I'm always listening to the music you talk about on this channel. I didn't realize so much was going on behind the scenes. Tragedy, triumph, success, failure. It's so interesting to hear all this
