Lou Reed is my favorite ARTIST and biggest personal influence of all time. He/his work (One and the same.) relates to you or not. There's nothing in between. Miss him every day. Thanks a lot for sharing and keep on rockin' 🤘🎸

If you haven't listened to Metal Machine Music, start with Side 4 and the rest will soon start to make sense.

I'm a big Lou Reed fan but I have no interest in ever listening to this album in full. A book about Berlin……..maybe. Not this. To say this is the greatest Lou Reed album is bullshit. Reed recorded this to piss off the record company……….nothing more.

I have been a fan of Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground for more than 50 years, but I have never made it through listening to MMM. I do like Hudson River Meditations though.

Transformer, Berlin, and New York are all 5 stars. The 3rd Velvets album is an absolute gem and showcases his songwriting. Lou was utterly authentic and not many other rock musicians can make that claim.

Rock 'n' Roll Animal and Lou Reed Live—which together make up the entire concert from December 21, 1973 at Howard Stein's Academy of Music in NYC—are all I need from Lou Reed! .-))

The shaggs, Philosophy of the World (1969) another horrible album. I heard MMM was thrown together to fulfill contracts with the record label….

I love it as an artistic idea and statement. A decision of the moment. John Lennon did something similar I guess with the Two Virgins album a few years earlier but it was independently released and Metal Machine Music was the commercial followup to a series of popular albums when Lou Reed was at the peak of being a rock star.

I'm a huge Lou Reed fan, I enjoy most of his albums, but I have never made it through Metal Machine Music. I don't doubt Mr. Holzer's sincerity in praising the record, it takes passion to write a whole tome about an album that nobody listens to and that will probably sell less copies than the album itself. Apparently he hears something that I, and most others, don't. I find it amusing that one of his other recommendations, Coney Island Baby, is maybe Reed's most melodic album. I guess if you want to experience a study in contrasts, it might be interesting to listen to both albums back to back. But I have to admit, despite the writer's impassioned case for the album, I don't think I have the patience to give it another try. I'll listen to Coney Island Baby, or Magic and Loss, instead. Or maybe just the song The Blue Mask, which is five minutes of martial noise but uplifted by some of Lou's most brilliant poetry. Angry rock and roll at its finest. I appreciate you doing the interview, Barry, there were a lot of Lou facts in there that I wasn't previously aware of. Well done, sir.

"if you love r&r, or music, or interested in music of any kind" Really? That's his pitch to get others to listen to MMM. Pretty feeble. Think I'll pass on the bk.

Metal Machine is more than an audio experience. In that context it has both highs and lows. Once heard surprisingly hard to dismiss.

The great Scott Walker made a couple of somewhat unlistenable albums (Drift & Tilt)… & don't forget Frank Zappa & Yoko. Trout Mask Replica anyone? It's definitely a 'thing'.
