My thoughts on Kendrick Lamar’s GNX

What bothers me about reviews like this isn't that you're wrong? It's just that it seems so ungrateful. We beg the guy to drop music all the time. He obliges not only that makes something that even the casuals can listen to. And we denigrate it because it's not a generational complex classic of a album there are four songs on there that are very deep have super strong messages for those of us who like that stuff in his music , and then it has bangers for the rest of them , I don't get it a masterpiece in my book

This is pretty much exactly how I felt listening to it. Fantastic album, but I was listening to it trying to see if the overlying concept or story that we expect from previous albums, but that much just didn’t seem to be there. It was an album full of great songs, sure, and better than most artists put out in their whole career, but Kendrick didn’t meet the standard he’s set for himself in the past.
I remember something Aaron Rodgers once said on that one podcast (I know, the dude is kooky, but bear with me). He boasted, “A down season for me is a career season for most quarterbacks.” Everyone laughed, but he was speaking the truth (at least it was true at that time). That’s how I see GNX. It might very well be Kendrick’s worst album, but it’s still better than the best from most artists.

Also, I’m writing this comment in July of ‘25, and you totally called it with his using this album as a means to get bangers out ahead of the Super Bowl.

I hope you revisit this record , disagree fundamentally on the songs being low effort. Especially now post-Super Bowl performance, hope your view has changed.

I consider GNX – an EP like album an appetizer . A very mature mixtape.

I think this album was/is his announcement to the entire world that he's in charge.
That's why this is probably his most "Pop" album, but still doesn't give up his integrity or thoughtfulness.
It's a victory lap that is also a homecoming and a warning.

Damn, what you were saying about preparing for the superbowl makes so much sense. I didn’t think about it that way but I did notice the album was more banger-heavy than usual. Now I get it.

It's odd because i like Kendric, and i like the album, but I've gotta feeling it's gonna get old really quickly… almost feels like we just watched the final saga of a marvel comic and now it (hiphop) needs a reboot

in retrospect, after the superbowl, i feel like this album was made for that performance so he could better convey the storytelling concept that he envisioned for the halftime show.
