6:03 I know EXACTLY what Matt means, even though I think it's more difficult in practice. In general, I try very hard not to do "comparison compliments", since it feels like an insult to the alternative (even if the alternative is awesome). Still, there are a lot of types of positive feedback that take way more words and thought to give properly, and a comparison is what many people default to since it's verbal shorthand.
There are some other positive things that even if I strongly believe them, don't feel appropriate to say. Things a person can't change intentionally… But then you enter the weeds into what people have power over. If someone says, "I like your hair!" it realistically means they like your style, but your hair could just as easily have been a different type. Still, it's something people DO take pride in, so what's best?
In-person, it's not as bad, since people can read some nuances and I can read (somewhat) if they'd be in the right state of mind for something to be said.
Sorry for the long comment, just something I've had in mind for a while.

I remember back when Conan started on Late Night how a lot of older people, who grew up with Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show ( and a little Jack Parr), really did not think Conan was funny. The younger demographic definitely got him and his humor. I'm glad he was given a chance. It was the same for SNL at the same time period. I thought it was great in the 90s but everyone in their 40s hated it simply just comparing it to the 1970s version. They were both funny just in different ways.
