Arctic Monkeys: He Fired His Best Friend For Being Tired

Guitar Meets Science | September 17, 2026

The rise and fall of the Arctic Monkeys remains one of the most polarizing transformations in modern rock history. From their explosive 2005 debut as Sheffield’s indie-rock saviors to their total abandonment of the guitar for 1970s lounge jazz, we explore the dramatic shifts that redefined Alex Turner and his bandmates. We’ll uncover the sudden firing of original bassist Andy Nicholson, the desert-rock influence of Josh Homme during the Humbug era, the massive global success of the AM album, and the bizarre 2014 BRIT Awards speech that signaled a turning point. We also analyze the divisive shift into the cinematic, piano-led sounds of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino and The Car. Kindly like and subscribe – it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

This VST plugin, The Stereo Sound Extractor, is BADASS -I coded it up from over 10 year’s hard research. It won awards. Now you can own it for the paltry sum of $29. Yup, I’m basically giving it away: https://burninguitfiddle.gumroad.com/l/rbiuu

I was kicked out of a band for having a pretty severe anxiety disorder and grieving the recent death of my mom, which made playing music pretty hard for me. People will do the damnedest things.

I saw them at an outdoor venue during the AM tour, it started to lightly rain, but it was so misty you couldn't even feel it. Then a double rainbow formed behind the hills behind the stage, I'm not even kidding. It was still one of the most magical concert moments of my entire life.

For me their early stuff sucks ass, i will just never understand what people hear in them.. suck it and see and tranquility base are them at their best, humbug is incredible and their first great album to me, and now that weve had a few years to get away from it i think AM is almost a perfect album

What if I told you that I'm cheating on my wife with a mistress? And her name is Guitar Meets Science….. on YouTube. I know I should come clean, maybe my wife will be cool with an open relationship. She isn't a musician like myself, but she's heavily into music so I think it would work. I think she'd benefit from some GMS love

I bought a used copy of that debut album to give it a chance since I was quick to judge the band when they were first coming out, but after listening to the whole record I still don't like them. There are some interesting instrumental moments, but on the whole it's boring and the lyrics and vocals are lacking.

The early cdrip version of the song "When The Sun Goes Down," sounds sightly better than the album version. I use to have it and lost the hard drive it was on in 2016 and haven't heard that version since.

AM feels like it was the last time there was a real rock trend setter. Everyone was all over it and talling about it and raving, that didn't happen much in the 2010's and nothing like it in rock has hit the public that hard since.
Idles, Chat Pile, Health, Wet Leg and some other rock bands got big in recent time, but they didn't dominate music like AM did when Arctic Monkeys dropped it.
edit, okay so I guess the arguement can be made that Sleep Token has hit that trend setter status, but I digress.

The quickest and most justifiable way to get kicked out of your band is to be the one guy that wants to screw everyone over by taking time off the moment the band is blowing up. To get big and stay big, the first couple years and first couple albums you really need to tour a lot and do live events constantly and go balls to the wall until you have at least 3 big hit songs so your not seen as a one or two hit wonder. Then you can take years off if you want and the band will continue to make money and grow organically on its own off all its big hits getting played constantly

This is why I love this channel, humbug is my favorite album by the Arctic Monkeys, go figure. They were mentored by one of my favorite artists in his own studio in Joshua Tree. History baby!

Well,,,,if you cant take it, going from city to city, and the rest of the band sucks it up and grinds through, dont expect the band to take you back after you flake out. Goid riddence. You need bandmates willing to embrace the suck, NOT bail on your bandmates because you "just cant take it" That's FINE. Plenty of Bass players out there that LOVE the suck….

I was so excited to see them at ACL in 2019 (2018?)… and they only played slow stuff. I was so bummed. Meanwhile Travis Scott was exploding the other half of the festival… I hated it. I wanted to leave because it was late but I kept telling myself to wait one more song because they might play something from “whatever people say I say”

I remember staying up late for the debut of crying lightning on channel 4 as a kid. Watched it and thought what a load of shit 😂 never listened to the monkeys past the first two albums after that disappointment

Day 16 in hospital. Thought I’d post an update here for those who are interested. I’ve spoken with the spinal specialists, and unfortunately, they are extremely hesitant to operate on me because of the complexity and sheer scale of what needs to be done.

The damage throughout my spine is extensive. My discs have essentially completely collapsed, and many of my vertebrae have effectively fused together, with significant bony overgrowth impinging on my spinal cord and the nerves exiting my spine.

Ultimately, I would require multiple surgeries at different levels of my spine. I already have scarring and bruising to my spinal cord, and without intervention, the neurological damage is expected to continue getting worse.

The surgery itself would be incredibly complicated and traumatic, and would take a very long time. In my upper back alone, surgeons would need to remove several ribs and a significant portion of the vertebral column in order to decompress and free up my spinal cord and the exiting nerves.

There are enormous risks involved. I’ve been told there is around a 10% risk of paralysis or death. If I were to become paralysed, it would likely affect me from the chest down.

This is particularly concerning because I already have significant problems with my breathing due to respiratory failure. Paralysis could affect the intercostal muscles and diaphragm that are essential for breathing.

So, after taking everything into consideration, the spinal surgeons have determined that the surgery is currently too dangerous and technically difficult to justify undertaking. They aren’t prepared to risk such catastrophic complications.

    I’m absolutely devastated. 💔

I genuinely thought that, after everything I’ve been through, I might finally be able to have something done to alleviate this situation. Instead, it feels like I’m back at the same place again, with no clear surgical solution.

Since my last fall, the pain and neurological symptoms have become significantly worse, and now I have to try to adjust to the possibility of living with this burden long-term.

I’m not going to pretend this is easy. I’m really upset, scared and disappointed. Nobody should have to live with a condition like this.

But I’m still here, and I’m still trying to work out what comes next. 🙏

I want to thank the owner of this channel and everyone else who has wished me well during this difficult time. This is an amazing community that really does feel like family. Your encouragement and support has meant a lot to me. This old former rockstar thanks all of you. Your support has genuinely made getting through this a little easier.
