We are currently running through vital Earth resources at a rate of 1.7x what the Earth can renew. Meaning at some point, we’re going to run out of some things. Today we’re going to talk about the resources we’re burning through faster than we can replace, and what the world of the future will look like without them.

Change … the one thing humans are incapable of
@RyuuTenno
September 16, 2026 at 5:53 am
well, you can get plastic from plants, that's where we started with it before we started making it from oil
but, we can also just make the oil
turns out you can get synthetic oil, from coal
and turns out we can make coal
so
infinite resource glitch lol
i certainly don't recommend burning through it for plastic and fuel both, but it would be amazing for fuel at least.
Additionally, a lot of the other methods of transportation, we can just move back to coal powered steam, at least for a little while. Or, whatever kind of steam that cars were running off of for a bit.
not to mention we could find ways to hybridize everything. Diesel-Electric Locomotives are a thing, so, that's not to say that we couldn't figure out a way to do the same thing with cars and ships. Though, planes are a much harder one to sort out with this.

For those of you who have been left with a sense of existential dread, remember the timeline for us leaving Earth at the very least to be able to mine other bodies in the solar system will likely overlap before we run out of the more critical items here that we couldn't find substitutes for. 😉

Capitalism at its finest, future generations won't even have a planet to live on!

The boomers ignored climate change because it wasn’t gonna be their problem. We get the luxury of ignoring helium extinction. Suck on that future generation, we got to have funny voices you’ll only dream of

Maybe you volunteer, to save us from all this overpopulation you keep preaching? As far as below average content creators go, you won't be missed. I'll skip the helium balloon for your celebration.
@plasmashears

Fortunately, you can galvanize stuff with lots of different metals, including aluminum.
We're kinda screwed on the helium situation though.

don't trust any of the comments mentioning grokvoxus. they're bots pushing a crypto rug pull scam
@bossmanham
September 16, 2026 at 5:53 am
Buddy, overpopulation is nonsense, especially considering the human population peak is here. The population is soon going to start dropping off a cliff, and is going to cause far bigger issues than useable helium.
Way to discredit yourself

Considering how much of these critical materials happen to be located in China now sounds like the PERFECT time to have a trade war with them
This is sarcasm btw

Thankfully, Joe Scott 100 years ago was making the same claims on 1926 social media. “See here boys? We’re gonna run out of horseshoes, whale blubber, and castor oil! Heavens to Betsy! Whatever shall we do?!”
Translation: We’ll adapt and overcome. It’s going to be all right Joe

Earth has 3.3 million years of oil left.
15 quadrillion tonnes C ÷ 0.12 tonnes C/barrel ≈ 125 quadrillion barrels of oil-equivalent carbon. Compare that with humanity’s roughly 38 billion barrels/year oil consumption:
125,000,000,000,000,000 ÷ 38,000,000,000
≈ 3.3 million years.

There was a doctor who novel that covered the earth entering an ice age because they were too effective at cleaning up CO2 in the atmosphere. So that's not far off what you're talking about. It was a good story, though I'm not a doctor who fan, so no idea if it's a good doctor who story.

Joe, I keep hearing that they're making great advances in producing plastics from things other than petroleum. Do you think those efforts are not meaningful, or will not be replicated at scale in our lifetimes?

Humans on the whole aren't smart enough to manage our resources. Tribalism is going to rule the world and it will lead directly to de-civilization.
