The Strangest Dictatorship You’ve Never Heard Of – Inside Turkmenistan: https://youtu.be/69PjXvbczAk
This film explores the dynastyβs rule while also taking a look at the youthful counterculture movement which has emerged since the countryβs exposure to the internet. Hidden away in the Himalayan foothills, Bhutan is a country reputed for its exquisite natural beauty and the importance its people place on individual happiness. The Bhutaneseβs acute environmental awareness has made it the only carbon-negative country in the world. To many, the small nation seems like a model for the rest of the world.
But behind this idyllic façade, there lies a more sinister reality. Buddhism is the only religion the Wangchuck dynasty, which has ruled the country for the last century, tolerates. This ultra-conservative regime is closely intertwined with the Buddhist faith. The flocks of millionaires and Hollywood stars who arrive in Bhutan to work on their karma can only be accommodated thanks to the toil of terribly paid workers.

You're complaining about having to wait 2 months for a visa? Get real, that's record time compared to most countries. And you also complain about $250 for an all-inclusive guided tour of the country that never has before allowed the press in? I really dislike your framing everything in a poor light and the overall derisive tone. And they are incredibly fortunate to have a king that most people in the world would gladly trade their politicians for. Then you implied with that the free health care and schooling is all on the backs of "wealthy tourists." And what if it is? So what? What's your problem with that? I suppose if tourist money went to corporations you'd think that was better. Ok so 12 minutes is all I could take of your derisive tone, or maybe you just talk like that about everything.

I immediately love this country and 100000% align with its goals and values. Modernity is emphatically overrated. Happiness comes from nature and simple living.

I can't really put my finger on it but why does this video reminds me of North Korea ? One is condemned to 'happiness', whatever that may be. It's marketing fluff controlled by the Royal mafia to attract rich tourists. A phallus is such a reprehensible and unnatural 'thing' that it can't be shown in this video ?? Well done ! Why bringing this up then ??π΅βπ«ππ

Not a Bhutanese here but I watched the whole video and this is a big failure of a documentary. Visit again and do another one.

Unfortunately they can't stop bad influences from erasing the old Bhutan culture. Widespread alcoholism doesn't help either. Bhutan has a very serious alcohol problem.
And now they're turning their country into a new sort of St. Moritz, a playground for the ultra-rich. One super luxurious hotel has already opened, more will follow.

Bhutan is a case of benevolent authoritarianism or managed democracy, in which the king maintains tutelary control over the country's direction.

I remember reading a newspaper article about 25 years about how Murdoch offered Bhutan satelite dishes and TVs as gifts and shortly after how the social fabric started to unravel with domestic violence, theft, and other negative behaviours never before experienced.

The way this documentary is presented is ridiculous. Those people seem much happier than the capitalist slaves of the west.
