The Iran-backed Houthi rebels have reportedly seized Perim Island, a key island in the Bab al-Mandab Strait off the coast of Yemen. This puts the Houthis in position to exert major control over the strategic strait and the Red Sea. This island, along with new coastal territory in western Yemen the Houthis have taken in the past two days during their advance, will allow the Houthis to exert a great degree of control over shipping through the strait. Oil prices have risen this week, partially in response to the Houthi gains. Also today, in Saudi Arabia, damage is reported to pumping stations that are part of the important East-West Pipeline system.
