Hair Metal Albums We Hated… Until We Didn’t

For some reason I listen more the Motley’s “New Tattoo” album now than I did when it first came out. “Hell on High Heels.” “Hollywood Ending,” and “1st Band on the Moon” are all great songs!

But Patrick, you should have been instantly hooked by "C'Mon And Love Me". That's the best one on B-Side Ourselves.

Great choices by all you guys. That Shotgun Messiah is one I'm not familiar with and will give it a listen for sure. My first of two would be RIOT's 1993 release "Nightbreaker". While not perfect, it's a good, solid album with killer musicianship. My second would be David Lee Roth's 1998 solo album "DLR Band", featuring John 5 on Guitar. Another great hidden gem.

I bought Appetite for Destruction at For What Its worth records in '87!

Another Fantastic Roundtable! The Contraband album has always been a favorite among the "Hidden Gems" in my collection. As a guitarist, hearing Tracii and Schenker trading back and forth was a treat for the ears and I thought almost all the songs were great and catchy. Loved Roberts vocals. Decades later when I started reading or hearing interviews from various members about the chaos surrounding the band and recording of the album and that they had never even actually played together in the same room prior to the disastrous "tour" (or handful of shows) opening for Ratt, it made me second guess my thoughts on the album and if it was really as good as I thought. But, IT STILL IS! Regardless of how anyone else feels, I love this album and have cranked it in its entirety numerous times yearly since its release! Its a great Driving CD.

The Cult Sonic Temple

This is a really cool topic, especially considering how much I have been going back to albums I bought and shelved after only one listen and finding that I really enjoy them now. As for your guys’ picks, I have Red13, Eyes and Kix on my watchlist for stores or a good price on eBay. Recently found Hurricane and Hear, and loved them both, missed them back in the day. Had The Lizard and it was lost during a purge, so may have to revisit that one and see if my mind’s changed on it. I remember hating Violent New Breed so never bought the CD and tossed the cassette, so will have to revisit that as well. Don’t care much for covers albums, but might have to give B’Sides a listen based on your review. Never listened to Bullet Boys, actually, so that will be a new listen. The only one of your list that I can say I hated it when I got it, but love it now is the Contraband one.

As for my two picks, first would be Y&T’s “Ten”. Bought that album because of the artwork, but after one play it got shelved and eventually purged. Went back to it a year ago or so and it’s one of my “new” favorites. Love the song “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”, but really love all of it now and play it a lot.

My other is not really hair metal, but neither is Journey so I’m going with it, and it’s Boston’s “Corporate America”. I remember being so excited when it came out (even though I missed “Walk On” back then, somehow) and then thinking “what is this?”, and tossing the cassette out, eventually. Revisited it for a Boston album ranking and love it. It seems quite different from Third Stage at first listen, but giving it some time and you find the harmonies, melodies and great vocals are all there as you’d expect from Boston.

I was a metal head as a teenager. The only metal heads that liked poison were chicks. Every rose has its thorn was overplayed on the radio. I didn’t like poison in the 80s. Sick of negative grunge in the 90s I gave it a chance. Love the first 2 albums
