Legends of the Hidden Temple Was Rigged!?
If you grew up watching Legends of the Hidden Temple, you probably spent more than a few afternoons screaming at kids who couldn’t put together the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. But what if those contestants weren’t nearly as bad as we thought?
Years after the show ended, host Kirk Fogg made a surprising claim about the number of grand prizes producers could afford to give away. The creators of the show have pushed back, insisting Legends of the Hidden Temple was never rigged. So who was right?
In this episode of Dial-Up Days, we’re going back inside Nickelodeon’s most infamous temple to uncover what was really happening behind the scenes. We’ll look at the brutal production schedule, terrified contestants, Temple Guards the kids weren’t prepared for, the real difficulty of the Temple Run, and why winning may have been much harder than it ever looked from our living rooms.
And yes… we’re finally going to talk about that Silver Monkey.
Was Legends of the Hidden Temple deliberately designed to make kids lose, or did Nickelodeon accidentally create one of the hardest children’s game shows ever made?
Let me know in the comments which team you always rooted for: Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, Orange Iguanas, Purple Parrots, or Silver Snakes.
And be honest… could YOU have put together the Silver Monkey?
Subscribe to Dial-Up Days for more forgotten stories, behind-the-scenes secrets, and strange pieces of ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s television nostalgia.

is this entire video based on not understanding kirk fogg's comments? Is that intentional for clickbait? He was explaining why the grand prizes were way worse towards the end of the season, because they had already given away the good stuff they had budgeted for. It was designed to be hard but other than that it wasn't rigged. Kids are just idiots.

They screaming at the kids is rigging it self. They could have just as easily scream the wrong answers ect

But then we would have the phrase "gotta build that monkey." Spoken by Kirk Fogg.

In Canada we had a lot of Nick shows, but I don't recall seeing this one airing on YTV back in the day. We had "Guts" though. And I don't recall ever seeing the green team win

its so crazy i remember watching this, but i dont remember much about it other than i LOVED it.. But now as an adult I love the show survivor and honestly?? this video is making me feel like this is just survivor for kids.. like its only one day but like the challenges and stuff are giving the same vibes. Anyways, I used to love this show bc it felt like indiana jones vibes and i wanted to go on it so bad but I was in Canada so like, my chances were pretty much 0. I didnt even want to win, i just wanted to play.

I think they can position the temple guards and lock door sequence to make it harder than what it has to be. I don’t think it was rigged, but I think it could be easily manipulated.

I am that age, but I didn't have cable, so my experience with the show was randomly seeing it other people's houses. Same with all of the big Nick shows. 😆

Even as a kid I always wondered why they didn't just throw all three pieces of the monkey on the ground and put it together at their feet and then place the entire thing backwards on the mantle

Please stop using AI for script writing, the information is fun and good. But the AI coded script hits the ears so bad.

Even IF you had both pendants, they would sometimes have more guards than the poor kids had players plus the extra pendants. Absolutely 💯 rigged, they often had no chance even if they did everything absolutely perfect.

I remember as a kid thinking legends was rigged so Guts was my favorite. I still want a piece of the aggrocrag. Anyways LotHT always felt rigged because of the guys coming out and grabbing the kids. It truly felt like there was no method to it and that it was rigged. I also distinctly remember watching kids stomp on the steps to answer questions and the step not lighting up for them but another team and the kids did not hide the fact it was rigged. I hope we get an episode like this for Guts. I loved that show.

A lot of those runs were dirt impossible. If the treasure was in the bottom of the Central Shaft or was in the Heart Room and you had to go all the way over and under the Temple to get it, you were pretty much guaranteed a loss.

I think one issue with the show were the Pendants. You need 2 Pendants to make it so the Temple Guards don't matter. If you have 1.5 Pendants then you can find the other piece somewhere in the Temple. Now what if that piece were gated by three Temple Guards? Then It's an insta-loss regardless. Then there's the scenario when you go in with 1 Pendant. There is absolutely no way to get a second Pendant. Now the chances of winning are probably impossible if there are always three guards on the route to the Artefact. I think what they should have done was put two Halves of a Pendant in the temple to collect. Maybe even make it so if Teammate 1 collected a piece, then it would automatically go to Teammate 2.
I think with a puzzle dungeon like this, there should be at least two routes to get to the Artefact. One route is a safer route and the other is more dangerous (more temple guards). There should always be a route where you would run into only one or two guards.
The temple route should be tested so that on average, it can be beatable in 2.5 minutes (that's with a slightly above average team that's not fumbling around).
I believe there was an Elevator Room that took forever to move.
I bet I could figure out the Silver Monkey. It was usually the middle piece that was the tedious part. I bet the producers never realized how tricky the thing was to assemble.
I bet if I ran into a Temple Guard as an adult, I would be freaked out 😛
The thing that I looked forward to the most was the Temple music.
I'm amazed shows like this and Double Dare still aren't running.
Imagine being in the audience. You are there early in the day. You see this Puzzle Dungeon and can't wait to see it ran. Sadly that will never happen because you are stuck watching the preliminary swim races

I Was rewatching some temple runs and this red Jaguar almost made it to the artifact just a 2 rooms away by this point he already lost his pendent he gets to the tomb of the ancient kings just for the temple guard to get him his partner didn't have but 40 seconds left it was brutal I do think it's mixed cause that run was doomed to fail.

I remember moments where during the moat scenes, some of the contestants would ditch their water shoes and come out the moat barefoot, and would run and almost slip on the floor to ring their gongs. The camera would cut to the question and answer round and everyone would be wearing their water shoes again as if it never happened.

If you think Legends is rigged then literally every kids game show is rigged. Hiding the artifact behind in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey is no different than adding the Sundae Slide and multiple "Stick Your Hand In A Thing" obstacles on Double Dare or Carmen Sandiego's infamous Africa Map.
Also a couple of those wins on Legends were the result of production errors such as Joel Cruz-Davis' "perfect" solo run in Enormous Nose Ring of Babe (woulda lost a pendant of life if the Temple Guard Ghosts in the dark forest hadn't been caugh napping) or the fact they forgot to lock any of the doors on Mask of Shaka Zulu.

I'm turning 43 in two weeks. I was on this show growing up. A purple parrot. My family and I had three days at Universal Studios in Orland and we spent two of them waiting for my turn on this show. They filmed a bunch of segments for episodes back to back. When it was your turn to cross the moat, your group got called. When it was your turn for steps of knowledge, you got called. Then the events. All temple segments were filmed back to back. Everything was a well-oiled machine.
Except for my idiot fellow parrot. She absolutely could NOT figure out how to pull a rope across that lake. The more I think back on it as an adult, she had to have been told to be bad.
But hey, I saw 11 episodes filmed live! So there's that.
EDIT: Tried to get on GUTS at the same time, but it didn't happen.

I always remember an episode with the Silver Snakes (?) team with some swift and brutal efficiency. SoK was a breeze and they were at the bottom step before everyone else, both pendants at the temple games and they finished the Temple Run in LESS than a minute and a half IIRC. Was NUTS to watch the efficiency and I was hooked on the idea that if I ever got onto this show: I'd rep that jersey with pride lol.
It was genuinely amazing how some teams would come in and just clear a path and others would struggle to no end. 😂

I just remember sometimes the path there was like one certain way , and it literally was a maze of up down, backtrack a little bit , and it was like there is no way you can do this especially if they had to do it twice . I remember figuring that out as a kid and knowing this now… rip
