The Future According to Octavia Butler
Sci-Fi author Octavia Butler seemed to have predicted our dystopian present over 30 years ago. But can her understanding of history help us change our future? Garrison and Erika Alexander (actor and futurist) discuss the power of radical imagination and the lasting impact of her work.
Whoâs a defiant person you think we should feature on the show? Or do you have a story about someone who inspired you to be âabout that life”? Leave us a voicemail at 814-326-2866.

LeVar Burton (yes, THAT LeVar Burton) wrote a book back in the mid-1990s called "Aftermath". It scared the shit out of me when I read it. It was marginally successful; still, few within the mainstream media had reviewed it, and the public never heard of it. A few years back during the COVID-19 lockdown, the book received a second life. Book clubs reviewed it via online chats, and suddenly a great many folks who would never read a sci-fi novel became fast fans of his work and others like it. So much so, Mr. Burton revised it for modern times, and one can actually view his audio reading of the book in its entirety on YouTube.
That novel, along with other authors, changed my futurist pondering into practical thinking. I would suggest anyone who enjoys the genre get the book or listen to LeVar read it. I guarantee you will be shocked by how prophetic his book is, and how uncomfortable it makes you feel.

I totally understand what he meant he. African Americans were kidnapped from their home by pale monsters and brought to a new land. They might as well have been dropped off on mars and made slaves.

I'm so glad I was introduced to Ms. Butler's work back in college. She has helped me in so many ways. Mainly keeping my imagination alive. Knowing that anything is possible allows me to reject strict binaries, tradition, indoctrination among other things. God is Change is a quote that will forever stick with me.

Just as hardline religious movements transition from outlawed fringe groups directly into cabinet-level control, Christian nationalism has moved from the margins straight into mainstream political dominance. Broad polling data shows that over half of a major party now qualifies as adherents or sympathizers of the ideology, with its architects operating directly within executive policymaking and judicial appointments.
âWhen media commentators dismiss these figures as mere isolated "outriders" or opportunists hijacking a party, they obscure how deeply embedded these views have become. mainstream reporting often treats hardline authoritarian soundbites as fringe rhetoric rather than acknowledging that the electoral base, legislative agendas, and judicial pipelines explicitly back those exact outcomes.
âIn both instances, hardline ideological goals operate with minoritarian national support yet wield outsized state power. While broader polling shows the general electorate frequently opposes specific authoritarian mandates, the internal mechanics of primary elections and institutional structures allow a radical core to dictate state action.

A "big tent" means nothing if only one side of the tent gets to hand out the gavels. Nobody is saying individual voters or progressive backbenchers don't exist. The point is about structural power. When Hakeem Jeffries; who faces zero leadership opposition; elevates Jared Moskowitz to Ranking Member of the Middle East Subcommittee, that isn't a random personal opinion. That is the official Democratic party apparatus handing control of U.S.-Israel policy, oversight, and agenda-setting directly to an outspoken hawk. If Democrats win the House, Moskowitz becomes Chair. The members "screaming every day" won't have the gavel, won't hold the committee seats, and won't write the foreign aid bills. Just like the DNC managing primary rules to protect establishment candidates in past cycles, using a "big tent" label to harvest progressive votes while giving 100% of the institutional authority to establishment hawks isn't a coalition; it's containment. When leadership acts without internal opposition, their choices are the party policy. âThis institutional dynamic is underscored by leadership's actions. Hakeem Jeffries claims his secret Kushner meeting was about "affordability," but Kushner focuses on Middle East diplomacy, not housing. Right after, Jeffries named Jared Moskowitz as ranking member of the Middle East Subcommittee. Moskowitz immediately declared: "I will use this position to strengthen the unbreakable relationship between the United States and Israel, expand regional peace with our Gulf allies, and make sure American foreign policy is grounded in strength, security and reality." Backroom deals for Israel policy aren't "real talk"; it betrays the majority of your base who demand accountability for foreign aid. Same đŠ, Same people, Same politics, Same đŠ values. Expecting the same vote blue and white đŽđą, no matter who. This is đŠ Also, Kushner still has no security clearance. WHY VOTE FOR THE SAME đŠ.

âResistance requires a foundational belief that there will be a future and we will be in it.â I try to have as many calm conversations as I can with people who express doomerism, which runs rampant among white people right now. Thank you for the clarity of this thought, I will echo these words. Thank you Erica and Octavia and all the Black culture leaders who keep dreaming a future for all of us.

Illiteracy promotes control. The Constitution is written in cursive and they quit teaching cursive. Coincidence, not at all. Dementia Don said he loves the uneducated and the only time he has told the truth.
