The Horrors of Overnight TV

Farrell McGuire | August 28, 2026

Back in the day, strange things used to air in the middle of the night on cable TV. Infomercials, public access, bizarre experimental films, anything was fair game in the graveyard slot; a time when almost nobody had their tv set on. Today, we’re gonna dive deep into this forgotten world.

As a kid, I always found it hard to fall back asleep whenever I woke up in the middle of the night. I also loved watching TV, but the sign-offs of TV channels in my country really creeped me out. They made me feel like somehow, something scary would show up if I kept watching. I’m in my 30s now, and I still avoid watching TV sign-offs. They just feel so creepy that they still make the hairs on my body stand on end.

Everyone here talking about how weird waking up to Robot Chicken, but does anyone remember commercials for the Heart, She Holler? I swear I woke up so many times at like 3:00 am to one of those freaky ass ads

nah the scariest thing is your tv show ending and being replaced by ads trying to get you to buy rare coins and jewels with some guy telling how great of a deal this is

Dude, I'm here a year later, and honestly am so happy I found your videos. Most other video essays or documentaries rely on visuals still, like photos or just the videos themselves, and that really sucks for me as an ADHD riddled artist.

Having your smooth voice describing the content your covering really helps me stay focused while still having much needed background noise.

I wasn’t sure if you’d bring up Too Many Cooks. I saw it when it originally aired when my brother and I were up late watching tv and we were both soooo confused because we weren’t familiar with the other fake ads/infomercials on Adult Swim

In northeast Ohio we had a funny community access mix up. They used to do livestreams from a strip club for some reason. They "accidentally" put that in the time slot that was ment for an Easter Service message. They them stopped showing the strip club cam. What's funny is it felt like you were watching security camera feed from above the stage

Awesome trip down late night memory lane! Thanks.
I Loved the Stargazer guy who came on right before sign off. He would tell us about the current positions of celestial objects in the night sky. "Keep looking at the stars"

Ok, so, before I watch the video, this brought to mind a memory I have of watching some late night tv as a child, and it was probably one of the most disturbing things I've seen as a child.

I'm not even sure if what I saw had a name, if it was part of a larger show, or what, but, the episode opens with two black kids, maybe young teenagers, a boy and a girl, about 14 if I were to guess. The boy is telling the girl about this hot new space themed restaurant that they're going to, really hyping it up. I get the sense that they're more just friends hanging out than on a date, but idk, maybe that's just me misremembering, or kid me not wanting to think about dating yet. Anyway, they enter the restaurant, and are greeted by staff who are "dressed" like aliens with green skin and hands on their heads, and they seem very enthusiastic and lively. They sit them down, and the kids are brought a menu. The kids then order something, I think it was called something like "meat chunks" or something like that, and the waiter leaves, and then soon, staff bring out this massive pot of barbecue sauce, and dump it all over another random customer, who I remember very specifically, was a man with dark hair, wearing a yellow shirt, and the head manager then apologizes, claiming his daughters are simply very clumsy as they wipe the sauce on him further. The head manager then says they'll take him back into the kitchen to get him all cleaned up, as the man is stunned in bewilderment. They then drag his chair into the kitchen, and not long later, the "meat chunks" come out, and are served to the two kids, who didn't think anything out of the ordinary with the exchange. They eat the meat, and claim it's very good. Not long after that, these other aliens with feet on their heads teleport into the restaurant, and have a laser batte with the restaurant aliens. The kids and many of the guests assume this is meant to be dinner theater. Even when a man gets shot with a laser (the same man who was just taken away, btw, somehow he's there again, but now he's definitely dead, instead of implied dead), everyone just assumes it's all part of the show. I forget how it all ended, but I remember feeling deeply disturbed by what I just saw, and I've never seen anyone ever talk about it.

I saw it once in my life, and then never again.

I'd be curious to know if there's anyone out there who knows about what I just described, and where it came from, because I've carried this odd memory with me for years without ever really knowing what exactly it's from. 🤔🤷‍♀️

In 2010, I worked at a call center as a Ronco telephone customer service rep. I had to lie about living in Rockford MN if anyone asked, (I worked and lived in Winnipeg, Canada). Company Skybridge America had a contract for warehousing and providing customer service for Ronco around then. I feel nostalgic when I see a Ronco product at thrift stores, I had no idea how influential they were at the time.

Some if not most local Mexican TV channels still play our Himno Nacional at 12am. My parents remember it happening since the 80s! And I remember it as a kid in the 90s followed by weird phone trivia game shows.

2010s Adult swim's Off the Air at 3am was something else though!
