Pure Morning: How Placebo Tried to Kill Their Own Image and the “Nancy Boy” Hangover
While the world debated the Britpop rivalry between Oasis and Blur, a new and quite different band took the stage. Placebo seemed to come out of nowhere and appeared to be the antithesis of Britpop. Their song “Nancy Boy” in 1997 announced them as “the Filthiest Band in Britain” full with androgynous frontman Brian Molko singing about hedonism and promiscuity. But the band quickly tired of that image. This is the story of their second album, Without You I’m Nothing, their follow up hit “Pure Morning,” and how they sought to quickly dismantle the image that made them famous.

I saw the video for Pure Morning one late evening while battling insomnia and it blew my mind. Placebo showed me it was okay if I didn't felt like fitting into the rigid prision of standard masculinity and that it was okay to be an outsider.

I knew someone who roadied for several bands back in the day, Placebo being one of them. He refused to go into any detail, but he said Placebos behaviour backstage was the most disgusting that he'd ever seen and he refused to work for them again. This was a very open minded guy (i seriously doubt he would have been offended by anything to do with sex or drugs), so obviously i was curious, but he just wouldn't say anything more. After loosing touch for many years i bumped into him again. And after a little catching up and general small talk i asked him yet again what exactly went down. This time he claimed he couldn't remember. If he was lying then he was putting on a good act, but he seemed to me to have genuinely forgotten saying anything like this at all. Now we have lost touch again i could well spend the rest of my life thinking ''W.T.F. was it?''

Saw Bowie perform with them at Irving Plaza, NYC. They performed "20th Century Boy" and "Without You I'm Nothing."

My favorite band(besides The Smiths). Brian Molko is such an underrated lyricist.WYIN is my favorite Placebo album. Thank you for doing a video on them.
