16:59 I want to expand on this lesson further by noting an act of genuine solidarity for Tommie Smith and John Carlos by the white athlete often overlooked in the picture. Peter Norman, from Australia, was approached by Smith and Carlos about what they were planning to do. Norman was all in and offered his gloves to them (which is why they each raise a different fist; they're Norman's pair of gloves!). To quote from Wikipedia, "[Smith & Carlos] asked Norman if he believed in human rights. He said he did. They asked him if he believed in God. Norman, who came from a Salvation Army background, said he believed strongly in God. We knew that what we were going to do was far greater than any athletic feat. He said, 'I'll stand with you'. Carlos said he expected to see fear in Norman's eyes. He didn't; 'I saw love'.". Norman's small but crucial act of solidarity did cost him in life; even as a more passive part in this act of protest as well as his views against 'White Australia' policy, he was denied the ability to advance in athletics and as a result faced intense resistance even as an Olympic medal winning performer. Unfortunately he had to battle depression until passing away at 64 in 2006. We, as white leftists, must learn to engage in solidarity far more often that entails consequences. It's not enough to say "I support Palestine" or "Black Lives Matter"– as crucial as those statements are!– we must be willing to go against the grain and act in solidarity with black and brown and all other activist groups, even if it were to cost us opportunities later in life we would not miss if we otherwise kept quiet and peaceful ourselves, even in the realm of entertainment and sports.

I think he could not coopt, but loose money. Instead of selling the big revolutionary act, dont sell, loose money. I get the part, where he does not let us to live our catarthis through it. But he could put a crack into the structure. He could do something, where they would have to cut it out. Artist should NOT deliver a product. They give us a language of how to dream. In what ways to dream. And we do need to imagine a better world to fight for it. Rage against the machine did it at a BBC broadcast. „Fuck you, I won‘t do what you tell me!“.

Something few ever talk about in terms of the Tommie Smith and John Carlos salute at the Olympics: the third guy, was an Australian runner named Peter Norman.
The other two had forgotten their gloves back at the Olympic Village, so he gave his gloves to them and suggested that they both wear them in order to stand out even further. And when they told him what they were going to do he said “I will stand with you”. He even asked another athlete to wear his human rights pin in solidarity.
When he got home, Peter Norman was ostracized as well and was not allowed to take part in Olympic celebrations later on. His career essentially ended after the Olympics for his involvement. When he died, both men went to Australia and were pallbearers in his funeral. Eventually, Australia issued an apology to Peter Norman for their treatment of him.

I agree. Wow. Now I think that’s exactly what Kendrick is trying to telling us: I cannot save you but you can save yourself. Or at least work towards it. It’s ties back in Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers specifically Mirror. “I can’t shift the world on my own but you can shift your own world.” This video changed some of my perspective on this performance bc I loved this performance based on fact that is does a great telling of black life (and black male life) in America and about how American society and government controls us. But I agree that it was never revolutionary or meant to be revolutionary. But now I agree that Kendrick definitely did what he could within the parameters set by the NFL and Apple Music. Very insightful.

Todd Gitlin (1979, p. 263) describes the 'Jester's Privilege' you mention best (or better), as follows:

"In any case, it is in no small measure because of the economic drives themselves that the hegemonic system itself amplifies legitimated forms of opposition. In liberal capitalism, hegemonic ideology develops by domesticating opposition, absorbing it into forms compatible with the core ideological structure. Consent is managed by absorption as well as exclusion. The hegemonic ideology changes in order to remain hegemonic; that is the peculiar nature of the dominant ideology of liberal capitalism."

what i believe the ammerican flag was trying to say cause honestly more smart people then me pointed it out for me is that the ammerican flag is LITTERALLY built on the backs of black men in the halftime show and i believe that symbolizes that ammerica was built on the backs of black people.

10:04 i love this point also bc kdot references Gil Scott Heron with “the revolution bout to be televised” but the fact that he as a celeb shouldn’t be the one to point out these problems is also emblematic of Gil Scott Heron’s Lady Day and John Coltrane, a song on the same album

The guys wearing jeans and white t-shirts are his 16 dead friends. He sings about them in wacced murals. 6 guys are on top of the light polls (they are his angels; also, there is a commercial for pglang with this same scenario). But at this point, I guess you know about all of these details.

Okay but are we sure SZA was singing? She sounded prerecorded and she hit a dance move during a delicate note that absolutely would have affected her singing. It did not sound like she was live at all

The point of the flag is principle for me. Black people BUILT this country, and the flag belongs to all of us. We’ve ALL had our ancestors die for the liberties of this place, and I’ll be damned if some MAGA nut is going to lower my opinion of OUR flag. They need to make one up if they want it just for them.

Something you didn’t point out, maybe because you were there in person… this was the first Super Bowl halftime performance that was primarily for **those not at the Superbowl**. It was for the people at home who couldn’t afford the $$$$$$ tickets to go to the Super Bowl. Kendrick was performing for his fans, not the relatively rich people attending the Super Bowl (no disrespect to ya for going, it’s just too much money for most of us). The choreography was for the TV more than anything else.

I thought “Right time, wrong guy” was clearly referring to Trump. It’s the right time for a revolution, but we picked the wrong guy. Idk seemed pretty clear to me.

I sincerely doubt he could have gone any harder. The literally had his mic on damned near mute. The NFL knows how to hire someone to mix sound, especially for the camera its literally their job. They muted him.

BooBoo Signifire, the American flag motif to me seemed symbolic of the fact that America as a concept and a nation was/is made possible off of the backs of Black people and free/cheap labor. The flag was divided down the middle split with Kendrick in between the divide. Futher inferences can be made from there.
