The Death of Free Will

Aperture | August 19, 2026

There is a quiet assumption most of us carry without ever examining it: that we are in control of our own attention. That every video, every scroll, every click is something we chose. But what if the machine got there first? What if free will, the thing you’re using right now to trust your own judgment, to believe you’re in control of this exact moment, has already been switched off? Not stolen in one dramatic act. Just worn away. Recommendation after recommendation after recommendation. Quietly. Without alarm. Without objection and without you ever noticing it was gone.

I love how this video manipulated me for 33 mins to make the illusion of choice for choosing to click on the recommended video at the end; but my free will said no in the last sec

1:00 I didn't exactly intentionally search out THIS video. But also, the algorithm didn't feed it to me. This topic bothers me so much that a while ago I turned off and erased my YouTube watch history and I only check my subscriptions page regularly. So the channels I am subbed to are choosing my content. Which somehow makes me feel a little better than the algorithm doing it.

Even if the "veto" is real, I think it's still entirely consistent with determinism. After all, the agent exercising the veto is deciding on a course of action for some reason (i.e., the causal chain of events up to the point you make the choice). You may have agency, but the agency isn't free. Any agent that makes a choice at any level of consciousness has been shaped by the deterministic universe. Ultimately, I don't think free will is possible, but I do think that we need to live our lives as if it is, because individual responsibility and accountability are absolutely necessary. At the same time, remembering that we don't have free will can help us to be more compassionate by trying to understand the reasons that people make the choices they do.

For the money games section, I chose both guaranteed outcomes due to the fact that I'm more comfortable with losing $50 than having a fair chance at losing $1100. It just makes more logical sense.

I choose 50% chance to get 1000 bucks. I also choose the 100% chance to lose 500. Ok, let's see what this is about. Edit: Oh I have to elaborate on the thought process. Well I guess if I absolutely lose, I lose 500. If I absolutely win I get 500, which is more than the 450 I would get if I chose 100% 450 and then 50% 1100 loss. If I choose 100% 450 and then 100% 500 that's losing 50 bucks, that's not worth playing for. If I choose 450 but then 50% gamble on losing 1100, then I might lose 650 which is losing more than what I would lose if I don't win the 1000 like I'm expecting and also lose the 500 by 100% chance. So your suggestion would make a potentially worse option than my worst option. So I could lose 50 bucks at 100% certainty, which is not fun, or I could lose 650 at a 50% certainty which is not good. Or I could lose 500 with idk how much certainty, I am bad at math, but that seems more fun. I chose the maybe 1000 definitely -500 option.

I believe life is hard determined but also relatively tied to your fate/Destiny and this goes for the people who create the algorithms, rules, laws ect. Its indifferent.

there is no algorithm working for me , i choose to open youtube over my pc and then as my homepage gets no recommendations due to watch history being cleared and paused . i choose to go to your channel and out of all your videos i choose to watch this one because i never explored this idea. so is the point described in first few minutes of this video still stands.
