Queens Of The Stone Age Frontman GOES OFF In Epic Stage Rant

Rock Feed | August 18, 2026

Josh Homme lit a cigarette on stage at Ford Field in Detroit after Queens of the Stone Age were warned that smoking anywhere on the property would cost the band $10,000. He did it in front of 35,000 people, seconds before the band closed with “A Song for the Dead.”

It happened August 6, 2026, on night two of the Foo Fighters’ Take Cover Tour, with Queens in the opening slot and Mannequin Pussy on the bill. According to the Detroit Metro Times, Ford Field bans smoking and vaping everywhere inside the building, there was no designated area for the band, and Queens spent part of the night wandering the stadium corridors looking for anywhere they were allowed to light up.

Maybe an unpopular take , but the vast majority of these rules are insurance based . The venue or agency has to carry a policy by law in order to put on events . And smoking is a fire hazzard , as is vaping at times . Chew nicotine gum if you must .. The insurance company would like nothing more than to have a loophole out of their liabilty because they have already been paid in advance , it's pure profit at that point . Real life example : In my neighborhood we have a small annual festival . Dogs were always allowed . Last year somebody got bit and went after the festival organizers . This year ,knowing that , the insurance company not only upped their rate , they also stipulated "no dogs allowed" . So everybody got upset at the organizers but if they didn't follow the rules they could get dropped and possible have to shut down permanently . If I play a venue , even a dive bar , I have to follow their rules . I signed up for that . They are just trying to stay in business . My landlord doesn't hate BBQ's , it's that he doesn't want to have to be liable if one starts a fire and his policy clearly states "no grills allowed ". There goes his $800,000 investment .

What people don't seem to understand is the PRINCIPLE.. it starts with no smoking, drinks costing a fortune, the "golden pit," not even being allowed to bring in WATER… and it ends with losing all the (little) freedom we have left. Even if you don't agree with smoking—I repeat—it’s the PRINCIPLE of being able to do it

I understand the upset some have with smoking but those who smoke understand the risk and they understand some dont like it.
But i dont feel it offers anyone the right to cause another person problems for their own freedoms.
With that said o also feel we must try to handle things with understanding but i know Josh also comes from an era that never had these regulations or restrictions and it must be hard to accept and to deal with especially when others are given the right to do the very same thing others are being denied the right to do.
Anyway i support Josh and ive been a fan of Queens almost since the beginning.
    Also Kyuss Rules!!!!!!!
