These Machines Have Been Running Since Before You Were Born | Tales From the Bottle

Did you know there are machines that have been running since before any currently living person was born? They might just outlive you too…

“A long-term experiment is an experimental procedure that runs through a long period of time, in order to test a hypothesis or observe a phenomenon that takes place at an extremely slow rate. What duration is considered “long” depends on the academic discipline. For example, several agricultural field experiments have run for more than 100 years, but much shorter experiments may qualify as “long-term” in other disciplines. An experiment is “a set of actions and observations”, implying that one or more treatments (fertilizer, subsidized school lunches, etc.) is imposed on the system under study. Long-term experiments therefore contrast with nonexperimental long-term studies in which manipulation of the system studied is impossible (e.g. Jupiter’s Great Red Spot) or undesirable (e.g. field observations of chimpanzee behavior).”

Steam Pumping Engines in many an old Waterworks. Many have ran for decades without stopping. They took forever to wear because they turned so slowly and were kept continuously lubricated by the watch engineer. Many parts of the Engine could be adjusted as it ran. They were insanely reliable and almost never broke down.

Shannon's 10^120 estimate for how many chess games there are is a comedically small lower bound because of flawed methodology. A more rigorous estimate is around 10^34082

My brother loves to tell me about an old Volvo stationwagon that ran for a little over a million miles. It only stopped when the owner of the vehicle passed away.

I have one of those black 7 piece ball point retractable pens that the US military and other government institutions used to use. I bought it out of a vending machine for a quarter at my high school in 1982. I used it for the last half of my senior year, wrote letters home while in the Marines with it, kept it my checkbook for decades to write checks to pay bills and balance my checkbook. I pad my last bill with it 4 years ago before it gave out. 44 years of use. I still keep it's corpse in my checkbook as a keepsake. Good luck with any pens made since then.
